Address by Hungarian President László Sólyom to the “Matthiae-Mahl” (Matthias Dinner)

Thank you for your kind invitation, which means more to me than a mere friendly and diplomatic gesture.

Nowadays, I often have the feeling of coming full circle. By that, I mean that I am returning to places that played important and positive roles in my life many years ago. This visit has given me food for thought while it also allows me to feel a certain sense of satisfaction.

I spent many months at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law here in Hamburg on multiple occasions in the 1970s and early 1980s. When I had free time I did a great deal of exploring, starting out in Mittelweg and going from there to the various parts of Hamburg and then to the smaller towns of Northern Germany, seeking the world of the Buddenbrooks and Theodor Storm. And it was here, in Hamburg that I saw Peter Zadek’s Shakespeare productions, and learned to love Monteverdi in German and Japanese student performances.

However, my return today carries an emotional weight that goes beyond my discoveries of the past. During those days I never would have dreamed that I would someday visit the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg in a unified Germany as the President of a free and independent Republic of Hungary. And this year’s Matthias Dinner theme – the regime change – is also very close to my heart, for the role I played in that change and the responsibility I bear to this day forces me to continuously analyze and re-evaluate the entire historical process.
